Based on its natural and socio-cultural potentials, Champasak Province deployed an investment promotion and socio-economic development strategy targeted to develop priority sectors such as: (1) agricultural production and establishment of processing industries as well as (2) natural, historical and cultural tourism. The province allocated 4 investment promotion and 4 tourism promotion zones:
1. The four investment promotion zones are (1) Paksong District which is allocated for plantation of coffee, organic vegetable, tea and assorted fruits; (2) The Boloven plateau covering Bachieng District, parts of Xanasomboune and Patumphone District. This zone is allocated for rubber plantation, cashew, durian, pineapple, banana, etc. In addition, the zone is allocated for processing industry development which is related to agricultural production; (3) The valleys along the Mekong River are allocated for rice production, fish cultivation, mulberry/silk worm and legume production; (4) The fourth zone covers 4 districts located in the Western parts of the province including Phonethong, Champasak, Sukhuma and Munlapamok districts. This area is allocated for livestock production; cassava, cashew production and production of Jatropha for renewable energy.

2. The four tourism promotion zones are (1) Khon District which is allocated for natural and historical tourism. The most important tourism sites in the zone are Khone Phapheng Waterfall, 4,000 islands in Mekong River and the old colonial locomotive; (2) Champasak District is allocated for cultural tourism. The most important tourism site in the zone is Wat Phu Champasak which became the second world heritage of Lao PDR; (3) The Boloven Plateau is designated for eco- and agricultural tourism activities, especially visits of beautiful waterfalls, other nature sightseeing tours, livelihood of villagers which is related to coffee farming and processing. The most important tourism sites are Phasuam waterfall, silk handicraft production which is linked to silk worm cultivation in Fay village. In addition, this zone is a provincial municipality in which a lot of hotels, restaurants, entertainment places and other tourism facilitations can be found and (4) Bachieng and Phonethong District are allocated for natural and cultural tourism.
